Heather Stepper

Photos by Annie MacDonald

Transforming “heather stepper”, a derogatory phrase referring to a Highlander, Sarah Paramor has woven together hairmoss and heather to make a shoe fit for a Highlander. Using local materials and heritage techniques (plaiting, coiling, stitching), this shoe was created to celebrate the Scottish Highlands, where it was made and where Sarah lives and works, and to toast Highlanders who have stepped out across the globe. Thanks go to Ewen Gillies, heather stepper and silver darling, who introduced this basketmaker to the phrase.

Where can I see "Heather Stepper"?
