Dark Tendril Bag

Photos by Annie MacDonald, AIM Photography, Applecross

Inspired by old images of sea anemones, this bias-plaited bag won second prize in the Worshipful Company of Basketmakers’ “Basketry of the Year 2018” competition.

I applied a traditional basketry technique (bias plaiting) to an unconventional basketry material (corsetry boning).

The handle, made from elastic, uses a wrapping technique traditionally used on the cane handles of silver teapots.

Corsetry usually reins female bodies in; I was interested in setting this extraordinary material free...

Corsetry boning, elastic.
